There is a persistent myth in the design industry that accessibility comes at the expense of visual beauty. This is not just wrong — it is harmful. The most elegant designs are often the most accessible, because both pursuits demand clarity, hierarchy, and intentionality. At Obsidian Studio, we treat accessibility as a design constraint that elevates our work rather than limiting it.

Color contrast is the most visible accessibility requirement, and it is where many designers feel constrained. But working within WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text) does not limit your palette — it refines it. We have found that high-contrast color choices consistently produce more impactful, more readable, and more professional-looking designs.

Keyboard navigation and focus management are areas where accessibility and good UX design converge perfectly. A well-structured focus order benefits screen reader users and power users alike. Visible focus indicators, when designed thoughtfully, become part of the interface's visual rhythm rather than an afterthought. Our approach is to design focus states as integral UI elements — not just browser defaults with a gold ring, but intentional visual moments.

Semantic HTML is the foundation of accessible web development, and it costs nothing. Using the correct heading hierarchy, landmark regions, and form associations provides the structural information that assistive technologies need while also improving SEO and code maintainability. It is the rare case where doing the right thing is also the easiest thing.
