The Art of Client Collaboration
The relationship between agency and client is often described in transactional terms: brief in, deliverables out. But the projects that produce truly exceptional work are built on something deeper — genuine creative partnership. Over eight years of running Obsidian Studio, I have learned that the quality of the collaboration directly determines the quality of the outcome.
Trust is the foundation. Clients need to trust that we will push creative boundaries while respecting business realities. We need to trust that clients will be honest about their constraints and open to ideas that challenge their assumptions. Building this trust starts in the first meeting and requires consistent follow-through on every commitment, from responding to emails within 24 hours to delivering on ambitious creative promises.
“The best client work I have ever produced happened when the client felt like a member of the creative team, not an audience for a presentation.”
— Alexander Mercer
We structure our process to create natural collaboration touchpoints. Rather than disappearing for weeks and returning with a grand reveal, we share work early and often — rough sketches, mood boards, partial prototypes. This transparency demystifies the creative process and gives clients agency over the direction without micromanaging the execution. The result is work that the client feels ownership over, which dramatically improves internal adoption.
Feedback is a skill, and we invest in teaching it. At the start of every engagement, we share a simple framework for providing actionable creative feedback. Instead of subjective reactions like 'I don't like it,' we guide clients to articulate why something does or does not align with the strategic objectives. This elevates the conversation from personal taste to shared purpose and produces more productive revision cycles.
